First Aid Knowledge Recovery Program

First aid is one of the basic activities of the Red Cross. Based on the idea of saving and helping the wounded and infirm, the idea of the Red Cross came to life. The Law on the Croatian Red Cross (Article 8, point 10) states that, under public authority, the Red Cross has a duty and obligation to provide first aid training for workers.

The Road Safety Act also enables the Red Cross to implement first aid programs for applicants in driving schools. However, there is no obligation to renew first aid knowledge for any segment of the population or in any law. In practice, this means that the average citizen usually only takes a first aid course once in their life and never again has the opportunity to update and improve their knowledge. First aid doctrine, however, changes from year to year and many of the commonly used methods of helping the injured are either banned or no longer used today. Also, new methods are used that the vast majority of people do not know exist.

For this reason, the Zagreb City Red Cross Society has decided to offer citizens, especially those most often able to help the injured, the opportunity to renew their first aid knowledge. We focused primarily on people who spend their entire working lives working with children and who have no medical background. Children are most prone to sudden accidents, crashes and other forms of injury, and they have no sense of responsibility for their own or others’ health. Thus, in 2012, at the recommendation of the City Office for Education, Culture and Sports, the Red Cross started the First Aid Knowledge Restoration Program for Zagreb kindergarten staff. Over a period of two years, about 2,500 educators, as well as professional and technical staff from kindergarten, have passed this program. Only positive feedback came from each of the 54 kindergartens covered, and the program was judged to be extremely useful and expressed the desire and need for periodic renewal of this education.

Based on the positive experiences with the implementation of this program so far, the Red Cross City Society has decided to extend the program and offer the same opportunity to Zagreb elementary and secondary schools. In this way, in addition to kindergarten teachers, another category of people who are in constant contact with children, ie professors and teachers, will also be able to learn how to provide first aid in a timely and proper manner when the need arises.
In addition, in November 2013, the Ministry of Science, Education and Sports issued a “Rulebook
on the method of action of educational staff of school institutions in taking measures to protect the rights of students and reporting any violation of these rights to the competent authorities ”(Official Gazette 132/2013 04.11.2013), on the basis of which every school in the Republic of Croatia is obliged to organize education from providing first aid to all its employees at regular intervals of two years.
At the beginning of February 2014, the City Office for Education, Culture and Sports issued a recommendation (Class: 602-01 / 14-01 / 19, REGULATION 251-10-11-14-2) to all elementary and secondary schools in Zagreb to begin implementation. of this program, which will be implemented over the next two-year period, organized by the City Red Cross Society of Zagreb.

Educating citizens in first aid

A large number of citizens believe that first aid is an activity reserved only for medical professionals and that persons who are not in a health care setting should not be aware of it. However, the statistics show that at least a few situations occur in the lives of each of us, in which it is necessary to quickly and properly help a terminally ill or injured person.
If you have the desire and / or need for training, we would like to inform you that the Red Cross is authorized to provide first aid courses in citizenship.

In order to organize the course, the Red Cross provides:

the teaching aids and aids needed to monitor first aid training
licensed lecturers
the courses are held in a licensed lecture room of the City Red Cross Society of Zagreb
the time and date of the course are determined by appointment, depending on the options
of citizens and the number of applicants
All interested citizens can learn how to provide first aid or renew their knowledge.
